A Past Daily Reading from God Calling

The cry of the human soul is never unheard.

It is never that God does not hear the cry, but that man fails to hear the response.

Psalm 102 1-2

The prayer of one afflicted and wasting away whose anguish is poured out before the LORD.

LORD, hear my prayer; let my cry come to you.

Conversatio Morum

Conversatio morum: Latin phrase, often translated to mean a ‘conversion of life’ or ‘reformation of life’.

Psalm 34:15

Turn from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it.

This sounds so much like common sense. Doesn’t every self-respecting person on the planet do good and seek peace? Then what point is being made here? The psalmist captures so eloquently the depth of meaning in this brief but packed sentence. While at first glance this verse might seem passive, it includes four action verbs that belie its initial appearance—turn, do, seek and pursue. Nothing passive about those. The life of discipleship is active, dynamic, and vigilant. A disciple is constantly in the process of personal conversion-Conversatio Morum. This process creates a chain reaction that gathers momentum as it goes, leading all to enjoy the peace and freedom of the Kingdom of God.

When we pray, the voice of the heart must be heard more than that proceeding from the mouth. - Saint Bonaventure (1221-1274)

Mark 11:22-24

Jesus said to them in reply, "Have faith in God. Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him. Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours.”

A Splendid Torch
I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.

I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. . . Life is no brief candle to me; it is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.George Bernard Shaw

Luke 12:20-23

But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?' Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God." He said to (his) disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life and what you will eat, or about your body and what you will wear. For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.

He leads-we follow.

The spiritual life is not our enterprise. It is the work of God. He calls us forward by grace and leads us, one step at a time. Got it? Get it? Good.

Peter: Faith + Goodness + Knowledge + Self-Control + Perseverance +
Godliness + Kindness + Love = Effective and Productive in Christ

2 Peter 1:5-7

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A Daily Dose October 18

Sometimes we are not ready to see the wonder of God’s wisdom and strength until we are gasping for breath in the exhaustion of our own strength.

A recurring story of the Bible is that mountains of faith rise from the valleys of failure. Before discovering the high ground we are looking for, we may need to see the failure of the dreams we hold in our hearts and trust instead in the love, wisdom, and guidance of our God.

2 Timothy 2:13

If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him, he will deny us. If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.

Instead of letting their light shine, some people spend their time trying to put out the lights of others. E.C. McKenzie

Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father

Discouragement is the enemy of your perseverance. If you don't fight against discouragement, you will become pessimistic first and lukewarm afterwards. Be an optimist.- Saint Josemaria Escriva

Romans 5:1-5

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace 2 with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access (by faith) to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Proverbs 6:16-19

There are six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to him; Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood; A heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly to evil, The false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.

Consider This...

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can get going without pep pills,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches & pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you anytime.

If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can ignore a friends limited education and never correct him/her,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

If you can face the world without lies and deceit,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor, sleep without the aid of drugs,

If you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion, or politics,

Then, my friend, You are ALMOST as good as your dog.

Those who do not believe do not pray. This is a good functional definition of faith. Faith prays, unbelief does not. --John A. Hardon

Galatians 3:22

But scripture confined all things under the power of sin, that through faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.

Saturdays, according to the tradition of many, is a day for honoring Mary. Mary, the mother of Jesus and our Mother. Throughout the history of the Church, especially the last 5 centuries, Mary has been our intercessor. How can we not be moved by her pleas, at LaSalette, Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe, and the countless other reported apparitions? Some have not received the "blessing" of the Church but nonetheless the messages all call us to life in Christ.Pray, turn from sin, turn to God it is all such a constant call.

The readings for Saturday continue with Paul's letter to the Galatians and he reminds us in this letter who we are.Baptized, clothed in Christ, we have become one in Him, and we are expected to live in faith, above the law.

The white garment given us at baptism symbolizes the victory won in Christ, and as was said to us through our parents, godparents, the Christian community we are to bring our white garment unstained into the everlasting light of Heaven. Is there anything more fantastic than to know that we are children of God? Coheirs with Christ to life in glory?"Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it."

Can we strive to make the Magnificat of Mary ours. We can if we, like her, are willing to say, "Be it done to me according to your word."Mary, the woman of faith, is our model. The promise of salvation is a reality, all is gift, all will be well if we accept the gift even if it comes in the form of a cross.

Prayer in its highest form is agonizing soul sweat. --Leonard Ravenhill

Ephesians 6:11-18
Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit.

Psalm 86:10-11

I can say from my own experience how painful life often is when one lives as a halfway Christian.; it is more like vegetating than living.

Blessed Franz Jagerstatter (1907-1943)

Ecclesiastes 5:3-4

When you make a vow to God, delay not its fulfillment. For God has no pleasure in fools; fulfill what you have vowed. You had better not make a vow than make it and not fulfill it.

Oct. 7 A Daily Dose... make it a double.

In the course of their journey he came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.'

But the Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, and it is not to be taken from her.' Luke 10:38-42

Today's gospel takes us to the home of Lazarus where we encounter Jesus with Mary and Martha. We are privy to their conversation when Martha complains about having to do all the serving while Mary sits at the feet of Jesus.
Martha is not reticent and takes her complaints to Jesus. We listen attentively as we hearJesus say, "Martha, Martha you are busy about so many things, but Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."
As I hear Jesus speak, I hear its application to my busyness. How often do I become so preoccupied with "doing", I don't take time to sit with you Jesus, and as a result I stumble on the path of life, trip in the darkness because of my own blindness.
I begin this day in peace, the peace you give, and I ask that you make me an instrument of your peace. Mary Queen of Peace, Pray for us. Deacon Shrek

"Don't worry. Be happy." Bobby McFerrin

He said to (his) disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life and what you will eat, or about your body and what you will wear. For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. Notice the ravens: they do not sow or reap; they have neither storehouse nor barn, yet God feeds them. How much more important are you than birds! Can any of you by worrying add a moment to your lifespan? If even the smallest things are beyond your control, why are you anxious about the rest? Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin . But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them….For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. Luke 12: 22-27, 34

Momma always says there's an awful lot you could tell about a person by their shoes. Where they're going. Where they've been. I've worn lots of shoes.I bet if I think about it real hard I could remember my first pair of shoes.

Brothers, I for my part do not consider myself to have taken possession. Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind but straining forward to what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God's upward calling, in Christ Jesus. Let us, then, who are "perfectly mature" adopt this attitude. And if you have a different attitude, this too God will reveal to you. Only, with regard to what we have attained, continue on the same course. Philippians 3:13-16
