Patient Trust

 

Above all, trust in the slow work of God

We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay.

We should like to skip the intermediate stages.

We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new.

And yet it is the law of progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability ---

and that it may take a very long time.

 

And so I think it is with you.

 

Your ideas mature gradually --- let them grow, let them shape themselves, without undue haste.

Don't try to force them on, as though you could be today what time (that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will) will make of you tomorrow.

Only God could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be.

Give Our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.

But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring (the) good news!"But not everyone has heeded the good news; for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?"

Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.

With egotists, there are no meetings, only conflicts. Egotists desire to hoard and gather for themselves, indeed, they adore their ego and always seek more honors, pleasures, wealth and influence. And to achieve this end, they will walk over others, push them aside or ignore them completely.

Familiar with quarreling myself, I will not hasten to blame others; I will examine myself first to see whether I am actually the egotist.

Romans 12:3, 10, 12, 16-18

A little boy hated stewed prunes. Yet he managed to eat all but two. His mother insisted that he eat them also. He refused; so she sent him to bed, saying, "God can't stand disobedient boys; he gets very, angry at them!"
That night a violent storm blew up. The mother feared that her son would be frightened to death. So she went to his room.
She found him at the window, staring out into the storm and saying, "All that fuss over two prunes!"


Is your motive for obeying God’s law fear of God or love of God? Either way, how strong is that motive? What’s the difference between the two?


Hebrews 6:9-12

But we are sure in your regard, beloved, of better things related to salvation, even though we speak in this way. For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones.
