I want to live to be so old that all my friends in heaven will think I didn’t make it… yet.

Titus 2:11-14

For the grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of the great God and of our savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good.

Lord, for the vulnerable in my workplace, including me, I ask you to pray.

"Life is precious because it is vulnerable. Let's not forget the preciousness and vulnerability of life during the times we are powerful, successful and popular."
Henri J.M. Nouwen

Matthew 7: 7-11

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him.

Have patience, lay aside a bit that anxious care of yourself, and have no fear that anything will be wanting to you. For if you trust in God, He will take care of you and everything necessary for your perfection. No one who hoped in Him and in His Providence has ever been disappointed. Saint Francis de Sales

Psalm 37:3-8

Trust in the LORD and do good that you may dwell in the land and live secure. Find your delight in the LORD who will give you your heart's desire.

Commit your way to the LORD; trust that God will act And make your integrity shine like the dawn, your vindication like noonday. Be still before the LORD; wait for God. Do not be provoked by the prosperous, nor by malicious schemers.

Give up your anger, abandon your wrath; do not be provoked; it brings only harm.

God in heaven, when the idea of you awakes in my heart, let it not be like a frightened bird thrashing about in panic, but like a child waking from a nap, its face aglow with a smile. Soren Kierkegaard free translation

1 Kings 19:11-13

There was an earthquake--but the Lord was not in earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire--but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the soft whisper of a voice.
and repent.

" '"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (then) I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.

When Elijah heard it he covered his face.

God is not a deceiver that he should offer to support us and then, when we lean upon him, should slip away from us. St. Augustine of Hippo

Revelations 3:19-20

Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.

" '"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (then) I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.

Make few resolutions. Make specific resolutions. And fulfill them with the help of God. Saint Josemaria Escriva

Lamentations 3:21-25

But I will call this to mind, as my reason to have hope: The favors of the LORD are not exhausted, his mercies are not spent; They are renewed each morning, so great is his faithfulness.

My portion is the LORD, says my soul; therefore will I hope in him. Good is the LORD to one who waits for him, to the soul that seeks him

A Daily Dose Thursday, February 18, 2010

Man is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this means to save his soul. All other things on the face of the earth are created for man to help him fulfill the end for which he is created. From this it follows that man is to use these things to the extent that they will help him to attain his end. Likewise, he must rid himself of them in so far as they prevent him from attaining it. Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Luke 9:23-27

Then he said to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?

Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."

Sooner or later the Lord hands us a cross, and our job is to recognize it. Our sorrowful mysteries will be different for each of us. We try to see our life through the eyes of faith, with a confidence that God in his Providence can draw good out of the most awful and unwelcome happenings.

James 1:2-5

Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
And let perseverance be perfect, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it.

1 Kings 8:28-29

Look kindly on the prayer and petition of your servant, O LORD, my God, and listen to the cry of supplication which I, your servant, utter before you this day.

May your eyes watch night and day over this temple, the place where you have decreed you shall be honored; may you heed the prayer which I, your servant, offer in this place.

Good Sense
We rarely think people have good sense unless they agree with us.

Philippians 1:7

Faith - How deep? Faith is more than fulfilling our Sunday Mass obligations and abstaining from meat on Fridays. Faith is about "loving God fully and showing this creatively in our daily deeds and positive attitudes. "How much do I really love God?" Be challenged to purify the motives of our deeds.

Psalm 40:1-4

I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry.

He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.

Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods!

Joshua 1:6-9

"Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

Really, there is often a huge difference between saying prayers and actually praying. That difference is up to the pray-er.

Matthew 6:9-13

This is how you are to pray:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Your kingdom come, you will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread; and forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors; and do not subject us to the final test,

but deliver us from the evil one.

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.

Our souls should be activated by the Holy Spirit.

Sanctity is the addition of the Divine Spirit to the soul in completion, by the aid of which the reign of God is realized. When so aided, the soul is habitually actuated by the instinct of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is essentially and always the same. But the manifestations of the Holy Spirit vary according to the characteristics and dispositions of His rational recipients. Father Isaac Hecker

2 Corinthians 5:1

What is a faithful man to do in the chaos of events which seem to swallow him up? He must sustain himself calmly by faith. Faith will make him adore the eternal plan of God. Faith will assure him that to those who love God all things work together for good.Blessed William Joseph Chaminade

Mark 6:1-6

He departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!

Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house."

So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.

He was amazed at their lack of faith. He went around to the villages in the vicinity teaching.
